Facebook Wants To Be Twitter, Part II
This evening Facebook began testing what appears to be their version of Twitter's retweet feature: "via". On any article shared by your friend, you can click on "Share" and when you post the article to your profile, Facebook will now automatically say who the article came from. While the "via" content only currently works on shared articles, I'd assume that this feature would be extended to other stream stories if initial user testing proves successful. We've written extensively about the Twitterfication of Facebook, and this appears to be one more step in that ...

The team is responsible for low level platform architecture, firmware, core drivers and bring-up of new hardware platforms. The team consists of talented engineers with experience in hardware, firmware, IOKit drivers, security and platform architecture.
What could those new products be? Maybe a thinner, friskier Apple TV. Maybe smaller and lighter versions of laptops that get into netbook territory. And it is a pretty good bet that the next iPhone will be using the Apple designed A4 chip that is at the heart of the iPad. Apple could also be thinking about creating products or technologies for other products that are not Apple branded. The sky is the limit here. [more]

Spying school district update: turned on webcams 42 times, FBI isn't sure that's legal
Remember the Pennsylvania school district that was accused of remotely flipping on the webcams of students' laptops? As if the civil suit filed on behalf of those students wasn't going to be enough trouble for the Lower Merion representatives, now it seems the FBI wants to know just what's going on, launching an investigation into the practice. For its part the district said that it remotely activated the cams 42 times, and that it only did so with the bestest of intentions: when trying to locate a missing laptop. It would also like to point out that only two employees had the power to flip the switch, and that they only captured images -- never sound. Because, you know, surreptitiously watching your kids is so much less menacing when there's no audio ...

School used student laptop webcams to spy on them at school and home
According to the filings in Blake J Robbins v Lower Merion School District (PA) et al, the laptops issued to high-school students in the well-heeled Philly suburb have webcams that can be covertly activated by the schools' administrators, who have used this facility to spy on students and even their families. The change was discovered by PocketGamer's Tracy Erickson when he plugged in his iPod touch running the old software. You have to feel bad for those who bought it, though. It really should have been free to begin with, since some games require it to run. Syncing the device running older software should prompt you to update to 3.0 for free. Genetic basis for stuttering identified
Mutations found in genes responsible for directing enzymes to their cellular destination.
Often dismissed as a psychological problem, stuttering may be the result of genetic mutations implicated in daily metabolic processes, a new study shows.
Stuttering — a common speech disorder characterized by repetition, prolongation of sounds, and interruptions in the flow of speech — affects about 60 million people worldwide. Studies on twins and adopted individuals show that it is highly heritable, and the new work suggests that 10 different mutations on three genes coding for enzymes could be to blame.
"As a disorder it gets no respect," says senior investigator Dennis Drayna, a geneticist at the National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders in Bethesda, Maryland. "I think our results go a long way towards convincing sceptics that stuttering is indeed a biological problem."

New Telescope Captures Dazzling Image of Orion Nebula
- By Alexis Madrigal
- February 10, 2010 |
- 6:00 am |
- Categories: Space
You've undoubtedly seen the smudge of the Orion Nebula hanging just below his belt thousands of times, but the most beautiful image yet of the celestial body was just released Wednesday.
The European Southern Observatory's new VISTAtelescope's enormous field of view allows it to image the entire nebula at once. It's been designed to capture near-infrared light. The longer wavelengths of light in that part of the spectrum allow rays to pass through dusty space without being scattering.
The Orion Nebula is located about 1,350 light-years from Earth. The cloud of gas and dust is a nursery for young stars. The red blobs in the features near the center of the image are young, growing stars that are hidden by dust in visible light.
VISTA was just placed into service late last year, so we can expect many more beautiful near-infrared images as it conducts its survey of the sky.
There are detailed close-up shots below, too.

Bill Would Apply Antitrust Laws To Insuranceby Julie Rovner
NPR - February 8, 2010
With Congress still at an impasse over how to proceed with a major health overhaul, the House this week will vote on a small piece of the measure instead: a bill to repeal a decades-old insurance industry exemption from antitrust laws.
"For 65 years, the insurance industry has had a unique — well, they and Major League Baseball — but the insurance industry has had an exemption from antitrust legislation in terms of price fixing and collusion, and you name it," said House Speaker Nancy Pelosi.
The bill, to change the 1945 McCarran-Ferguson Act, is highly popular with House Democrats, although less so in the Senate. [more]

"Although fathers' age can contribute risk, the risk is overwhelmed by maternal age," said University of California at Davis researcher Janie Shelton, the study's lead author.
Mothers older than 40 were about 50 percent more likely to have a child with autism than those in their 20s; the risk for fathers older than 40 was 36 percent higher than for men in their 20s. [more]

Criminal Probe Is Launched In Conn. Plant Blastby The Associated Press
AP - February 8, 2010
Authorities looking for the cause of an explosion that killed five people at a power plant under construction launched a criminal investigation Monday, saying they could not rule out criminal negligence as the cause.
"If everything went right, we wouldn't all be here right now," Middletown Mayor Sebastian Guiliano said. "There's a point where negligence raises to the level of criminal conduct, and that's what we're investigating."
The powerful explosion blew apart large swaths of the nearly completed 620-megawatt Kleen Energy plant as workers for the construction company O&G Industries Inc. were purging a gas line Sunday morning. The blast tore apart sheet metal that covered the plant's sides and left parts of the complex so unstable that rescuers were unable to work Monday because of the danger of collapse. [more]

VIZIO Super Bowl ad pushes internet connected HDTVs in a big way
We weren't sure exactly what Beyonce, David Goes to the Dentist and Chocolate Rain all had in common, but VIZIO squeezed them all into its Super Bowl ad. Still striving to remake its reputation from being merely a cheap HDTV manufacturer to a premium one offering lots of features, the ad (embedded after the break) shows how it's bringing "the best of the internet" with VIZIO Internet Apps. We still need to see if its picture quality will measure up and whether the widget experience has gotten any better (read: faster) in 2010 to be truly convinced, but a slick ad never ...

Filed under: iPod Family, Portables, Odds and ends
Over at TechRepublic's 10 Things blog, Debra Littlejohn Shinder has posted an article called "10 reasons why I'll be passing on the iPad." Some of her reasoning is sound, but quite a few of her points are easy to refute. It's worth looking at her post and the points it tries to make, because it's indicative of a widespread misunderstanding of not only the iPad's capabilities, but also its intended consumer ...

Special forces intervened while hijacking was in progress
By KATHARINE HOURELD, Associated Press
Danish special forces stormed a ship captured by armed Somali pirates Friday and freed the 25 crew on board, an EU naval spokesman said, marking the first time a warship has intervened during a hijacking.
After the vessel Ariella sent out a distress signal early Friday, the Danish warship Absalon sent a helicopter to confirm the presence of pirates, and communicated with the crew to ensure they were in a safe location, said Cmdr. John Harbour, spokesman for the European Union Naval Force.
Al Franken Makes Comcast's CEO Look Like A Tool
Love him or hate him, Sen. Al Franken (D-MN), former employee of NBC, made Comcast's befuddled CEO Brian "Comcatastrophe" Roberts look like a complete tool during yesterday's hearing on the proposed Comcast/NBC mergepocalypse.
We don't actually know if Brian "Comcatastrophe" Roberts is generally as confused and awkward as he appeared to be while trying to explain why Comcast would testify that FCC regulations provide adequate safeguards for consumers -- after it just argued that the same rules were unconstitutional . Maybe he's usually pretty sharp. We really don't know.

Telescope Finds Galaxy's Most Massive Star Yet
This glowing stellar nursery is home to the most massive star yet found in the Milky Way galaxy.
Captured by the European Southern Observatory's 27-foot-diameterVery Large Telescope at Cerro Paranal, Chile, the image above combines data taken with violet, red and infrared filters.
The nebula, NGC 3603, is surrounded by a cloud of glowing gas and dust in the Carina spiral arm of the Milky Way galaxy, about 20,000 light-years from Earth in the Carina constellation. This active star-forming region is one of the brightest and most compact star clusters in our galaxy. The cosmic nursery is teeming with thousands of young, massive suns, including several blue supergiants and three massive Wolf-Rayet stars. These brilliant stars eject huge amounts of mass before blazing out in spectacular supernova explosions. The most massive star in the cluster is 116 times as massive as the sun.
The photo below shows the broader area around the NGC 3603 nebula.
