PARIS (AP) - Interpol said Tuesday that 25 suspected members of the loose-knit Anonymous hacker movement have been arrested in a sweep across Europe and South America.

The international police agency said in a statement that the arrests in Argentina, Chile, Colombia and Spain were carried out by national law enforcement officers working under the support of Interpol's Latin American Working Group of Experts on Information Technology Crime.

The suspects, aged between 17 and 40, are suspected of planning coordinated cyber-attacks against institutions including Colombia's defense ministry and presidential websites, Chile's Endesa electricity company and national library, as well as other targets.

Gerry Connolly: Continued attacks on feds could trigger crisis

 FTA
"It is truly unprecedented that Congress has chosen the federal worker as the place for sacrifice," Connolly said. "We've now frozen federal pay for three years in a row, or will have, contributing $90 billion toward the debt. No other group in America has been asked to make a comparable sacrifice."

The pay roll tax extension bill will require an additional $15 billion from the federal workforce through changes in the pension program, which means the government workforce will "pay more and get less," Connolly said.

The pending transportation bill would also carve out $40 billion from new and existing federal employees. If the act gets passed, federal workers would see a 300 percent spike in how much they pay toward their pensions, while their benefits get reduced by 40 percent, Connolly said.

"Three different bills in just the last two weeks, targeting federal employees," he said. "This is going to have a devastating effect on morale, productivity and our ability to recruit the workforce in the future."

2012: The year of 'birth control moms'?

2012: The year of 'birth control moms'?

First came the soccer moms.

Then the security moms.

Will 2012 be the year of the "birth control moms"?

Just a few weeks ago, the notion would have seemed far-fetched. The country is deeply divided on abortion, but not on contraception; the vast majority of American women have used it, and access hasn't been a front-burner political issue since the Supreme Court decided Griswold v. Connecticut in 1965.

Voting Rights Act under siege

In a political system where even the most trivial issues trigger partisan rancor, the Voting Rights Act has stood for several decades as a rare point of bipartisan consensus.

Until now.

An intensifying conservative legal assault on the Voting Rights Act could precipitate what many civil rights advocates regard as the nuclear option: a court ruling striking down one of the core elements of the landmark 1965 law guaranteeing African Americans and other minorities access to the ballot box.

At the same time, the view that states should have free rein to change their election laws even in places with a history of Jim Crow seems to be gaining traction within the Republican Party.
