Bear feasts at candy store in Tenn. mountains

GATLINBURG, Tenn. (AP) - A bear has feasted on pecan logs, caramel apples and other treats at a candy store in the Smoky Mountains resort town Gatlinburg, Tenn.

Employees reporting for work found the bear Wednesday morning at the Ole Smoky Candy Kitchen, where the animal apparently had knocked a hole in a glass front door to enter, according to The Mountain Press (http://bit.ly/orYRBH ).

Police propped open several back doors and made loud noises, and the bear ran into the woods.

Nice... Typical GOP chauvinism.

NJ candidate's 'whore-in-bedroom' advice panned

TRENTON, N.J. (AP) - A political candidate in New Jersey is taking heat for tweeting that the way for a woman to keep her man is to be a "whore in the bedroom."

Republican state Senate candidate Phil Mitsch says he didn't mean to offend women. He says the comments were a version of advice given by others, including women.

Democrats attacked Mitsch for the tweet as well as others the candidate claims were doctored.

The state GOP has also withdrawn support, telling The Philadelphia Inquirer his comments made him unfit for office.

Mitsch's tweet read: "Women, you increase your odds of keeping your men by being faithful, a lady in the living room and a whore in the bedroom."

Even without the controversy, Mitsch was a long shot in solidly Democratic Camden County.

German satellite expected to hit Earth Sunday

BERLIN (AP) - A defunct satellite is hurtling toward the atmosphere and pieces of it are expected crash to the Earth on Sunday, according to the German Aerospace Center.

Pieces of the ROSAT scientific research satellite are expected to hit sometime Sunday morning European time, or between about 0000 and 0500 GMT (8 p.m. EDT Saturday or 1 a.m. EDT Sunday), the agency said late Saturday.

Most parts of the minivan-sized satellite will burn up during re-entry into the atmosphere but up to 30 fragments weighing 1.87 tons (1.7 metric tons) could crash into Earth at speeds up to 280 mph (450 kph).

The satellite orbits every 90 minutes and it could hit almost anywhere along its path - a vast swath between 53-degrees north and 53-degrees south that comprises much of the planet outside the poles, including parts of North America, Europe, Africa and Asia.

Well, that would be entertaining at least...

'Survivor' favorite to run for Indiana governor

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) - Rupert Boneham won over TV viewers during 2004's "Survivor: All-Stars" - earning a nifty $1 million as the overwhelming choice for fan favorite on the reality show. Now the bushy-bearded Boneham is hoping Indiana voters will find him just as charming.

Boneham, 47, announced Saturday that he's seeking the Libertarian Party nomination for Indiana governor, saying he wants to take on the state's political establishment because he feels voters deserve better.

According to Federal Times:
"Federal employees are being increasingly concentrated into higher paygrades without taking on greater responsibility, according to a Federal Times analysis of government data."

Is this just sloppy work or a bias?

How, exactly, does Federal Times know that employees aren't taking on greater responsibility, unless they interviewed the employees?
They clearly haven't and state the same at the end of the article.

They talked to senior management? Because they are so aware of what is happening at the ground level?

What I see are GS staff doing more and more, as their co-workers have retired or left for better opportunities.  The climate is so bad now (no pay raises for 2 years, no support, no help, no new staff filling critical roles) that many are fleeing the federal ranks and most would not consider entering the federal workforce.

You can't fix the problem of the federal workforce by blaming the staff.

Facebook turns to Websense for malicious URL detection 

The goal is to protect users from clicking on links that take them to phishing and malware sites

Faceboo has partnered with security vendor Websense to protect its users from third-party malicious URLs spammed on the social networking website, the companies said on Monday.

Facebook has been plagued by malware distribution campaigns, survey scams and other types of threats for years now and despite the company's best efforts the attacks continue.
