IE Performance Tip: avoid repeating tags

FTA:
So, using the CSS to style an entry with an appropriate image, instead of using an image tag gives us a 67% speed increase in IE's rendering time on the initial download, and a 77% increase in rendering time on refresh.

Reduced time to render from 16.77 seconds to 5.6 seconds
and reduced time to reload from 24.5 seconds to 5.6 seconds

Pretty impressive and it costs zippy...

Google Commits to

Google has announced that it has made some changes to its service level agreement (SLA) for Google Apps, to reduce the possibility that users will experience any downtime. The company says it has eliminated maintenance windows from the SLA, so Google will never plan for users to be down when they're upgrading services or maintaining their systems.

"People expect email to be as reliable as their phone's dial tone, and our goal is to deliver that kind of always-on availability with our applications," says Matthew Glotzbach, Google's Enterprise Product Management Director. "Going forward, all downtime will be counted and applied towards the customer's SLA."

Google has also made changes to the SLA so that any intermittent downtime is counted. "Previously, a period of less than ten minutes was not included," explains Glotzbach. "We believe any instance that causes our users to experience downtime should be avoided -- period."

SBInet gets killed. At only $18 Million per mile, it seemed like such a bargain.

The Department of Homeland Security is ending the Secure Border Initiative-Net (SBInet) Program, the project to build an electronic fence along the nation's southwest border.

DHS will instead implement a new strategy tailored to each region's border terrain and population, said DHS Secretary Janet Napolitano in a statement Friday.

AMAZING - The Wilkinson Tree House Residence By Robert Harvey Oshatz

Located on a flag lot, a steep sloping grade provided the opportunity to bring the main level of the house into the tree canopy to evoke the feeling of being in a tree house. A lover of music, the client wanted a house that not only became part of the natural landscape but also addressed the flow of music. This house evades the mechanics of the camera; it is difficult to capture the way the interior space flows seamlessly through to the exterior. One must actually stroll through the house to grasp its complexities and its connection to the exterior. One example is a natural wood ceiling, floating on curved laminated wood beams, passing through a generous glass wall which wraps around the main living room.

Whoa. Big problems possible...

Android still has horrible text messaging bugs that'll get you fired, busted, or otherwise embarrassed

Pardon us if the headline is a little sensational, but this is one that we've personally experienced -- and it's not pretty. For at least the last couple versions, Android has been plagued with a couple extremely serious bugs in its text messaging subsystem that can ultimately end up causing you to text the wrong contact -- even contacts that you've never texted before. There appear to be a few failure modes; the one we definitely experience on the Gingerbread-powered Nexus S involves being routed to the wrong thread when you tap it either in the Notifications list or the master thread list in the Messaging application, so if you don't notice, you'll end up firing a message to the wrong ...

Time to dig in to these...
