Service-disabled veteran-owned program ripe for abuse -- Washington Technology
In the past few years, the government contracting industry has weathered its share of scandals.
From accusations of questionable behavior by contractors in Iraq and Afghanistan to front-page exposés of cozy relationships between contractors and customers, the industry's reputation has suffered.
Most recently, the industry has drawn fire over allegations that at least one large business was using small businesses as fronts to funnel money to itself. (See our recent coverage of GTSI Corp.'s suspension and reinstatement by the Small Business Administration.)
Another scandal is brewing because of the proliferation of small companies owned by service-disabled veterans and procurements geared specifically for these businesses.

iOS: The popular font-identifying web site WhatTheFont (our look) now has an iOS app, letting you quickly identify fonts you see outside of your computer screen.
As far as web tools that ought to have mobile apps go, WhatTheFont really leads the pack. The iPhone's (or iPod touch's) camera really makes a great companion. If you're ever walking around and see a font you really like, you can snap a picture with the WhatTheFont app and upload it directly from your phone. Just like on the web site, it'll work with you to identify the individual characters and then make font suggestions. While WhatTheFont isn't always perfect, when you get a clear picture it can get pretty close. New video-chatting software from Apple, available in beta Wednesday, can connect to Macs, iPhone 4s, and the latest iPod touch.
The FaceTime for Mac beta is available as a download from Apple. It requires Mac OS X 10.6. You'll need an Apple ID and an e-mail address to get started with the program.

Federal agencies say they are ready for next month's shift to real-time reporting of cybersecurity compliance, J. Nicholas Hoover writes in InformationWeek.
The CyberScope compliance tool, scheduled to go live Nov. 15, will replace annual paper reports on compliance with Federal Information Security Management Act requirements with automated feeds of systems status that will be correlated by the Homeland Security Department.

The General Services Administration awarded 11 vendors spots on the first governmentwide contract for cloud computing-
GSA announced Tuesday a blanket purchase agreement for infrastructure-as-a-service (IaaS), including cloud storage, virtual machines and Web hosting. All of these services eventually will be available through the Apps.gov portal.
"Offering IaaS on Apps.gov makes sense for the federal government and for the American people," said Vivek Kundra, federal chief information officer, in a release. "Cloud computing services help to deliver on this administration's commitment to provide better value for the American taxpayer by making government more efficient."
