War on Planned Parenthood is war on women's health

FTA:
By the way, the Republicans aren't just defunding Planned Parenthood, they're taking federal funding away from all reproductive health services—including family planning—for all women's clinics. And none of that funding—none—pays for abortion. Only about a quarter of federal funds for family planning and women's healthcare goes to Planned Parenthood, three-quarters goes to clinics in communities all over the country. And for many American women, those clinics are the only healthcare they have access to.

Sony CEO Lets Slip That iPhone 5 Will Have 8MP Camera - Slashdot

An anonymous reader writes"During a recent interview with Walt Mossberg, Sony CEO Sir Howard Stringer may have inadvertently let it slip that Sony plans to supply Apple with 8 megapixel cameras for the next-gen iPhone. While discussing the Japanese earthquake, Stringer noted that Sony's camera sensor plant in Sendai had been affected and that shipments of 8 megapixel camera sensors to Apple were subsequently delayed."

The dangers of a pay as you go infrastructure? Politics get in the way quickly...

These sites will go dark by May 31:

many of the efforts related the FEDRamp

These have funding through ~July 30:

OMB prepares for open gov sites to go dark in May

Many of the Obama administration's top open government initiatives are set to be turned off by May 31.

Government sources confirm that the Office of Management and Budget is planning to take seven websites dark in two months because of a lack of funding.

One government official, who requested anonymity because they didn't get permission to discuss the topic, said funding will begin to run out on April 20 for public sites IT Dashboard, Data.gov and paymentaccuracy.gov. The source said OMB also is planning on shutting down internal government sites, including Performance.gov, FedSpace and many of the efforts related the FEDRamp cloud computing cybersecurity effort.

The official said two other sites, USASpending.gov and Apps.gov/now, will run through July 30 but go dark soon after.

"We need at least another $4 million just to keep USASpending.gov operating this year," the official said. "We are looking at a pass-the-hat approach, but it could be challenging to get that done in time."

The White House requested $35 million for the e-government fund in 2011. The House allocated only $2 million in its bill, H.R. 1. The Senate, meanwhile, would provide $20 million for the e-government fund.

Cloud and Efficiency Are Driving Data Center Decisions |

According to a survey by AFCOM, cloud computing is on the rise among data center operators, more than doubling since last year, and expected to reach 80-90 percent in the next five years. Among respondents to the data-center-focused organization's annual "State of the Data Center" survey, 36.6 percent have implemented some form of cloud computing technology within their data centers, and another 35.1 percent are seriously considering doing so. This is big leap from last year, when only 14.9 percent had implemented cloud technology, and underscores a general consensus among IT professionals and pundits that cloud computing is fast becoming an accepted delivery model for IT resources.

I'm sure glad WI state legislators are the experts on Open Source... /sarcasm

State lawmakers oppose open source for VA health records -

Single-vendor approach at odds with VA's plans for open source development -

A group of Wisconsin lawmakers are trying to talk the Veterans Affairs and Defense departments to abandon their plan for an open-source approach to digital health records, according to a report today by Bob Brewin, in Nextgov. Instead, the legislators want the agencies to use a single commercial vendor to handle their digital health records because that approach would be faster to deploy, more efficient and better for patient safety -- and could provide a contract for a Wisconsin company,

If VA and DOD accept that recommendation, it potentially could cause a delay in current plans for integration and modernization of VA and DOD record systems, Brewin reports. It also could benefit medical record system solutions provider Epic Systems Corp. of Verona, Wisconsin.

In a response to one of the Wisconsin lawmakers, Roger Baker, VA assistant secretary for information and technology, stood by the open source approach.

RSA breach leaks data for hacking SecurID tokens

'Extremely sophisicated' attack targets 2-factor auth

Attackers breached the servers of RSA and stole information that could be used to compromise the security of two-factor authentication tokens used by 40 million employees to access sensitive corporate and government networks, the company said late Thursday.

"Our investigation has led us to believe that the attack is in the category of an Advanced Persistent Threat (APT)," RSA Executive Chairman Art Coviello said in an undated letter posted on the company's website. "Our investigation also revealed that the attack resulted in certain information being extracted from RSA's systems."

Neither the letter nor a filing (PDF) with the Securities and Exchange Commission identified what the stolen data was, but Coviello went on to say it "could potentially be used to reduce the effectiveness of a current two-factor authentication implementation as part of a broader attack."

BlackBerry Cracked In Hacking Contest -

RIM's revamp of browser with open-source code gave the winners an opening

By Kelly Jackson Higgins
Darkreading
The closely held BlackBerry is no longer a relative enigma in smartphone security: a team of three researchers yesterday at the Pwn2Own contest at the CanSec West conference in Vancouver hacked the device by exploiting a vulnerability in BlackBerry's newest browser version.

The team -- Vincenzo Iozzo, Willem Pinckaers and Ralf Philipp Weinmann -- exploited a flaw in the open-source WebKit browser code that RIM now uses in new versions of its smartphone platform, and then grabbing the contact list and image database of a RIM BlackBerry Torch 9800.
