iPhone lock -

Apple adds pattern locking to an iPhone app that you can't have?

The nine-dot pattern lock option is one of those uniquely Android things -- it's been there ever since the G1, and even if you don't personally use it, odds are good that you recognize it. So when we see it on an iPhone -- apparently on an app used by Apple internally -- you can appreciate why we're going to do a double take. What you're looking at here is one of several screens obtained by 9 to 5 Mac, allegedly showing a version of Apple's employee-only AppleConnect app with support for pattern locking to keep prying eyes out. It seems that the app enforces some minimum gesture length to constitute a secure lock -- and considering some of the forensic science going on there, we bet it's gotta be pretty long. Of course, none of these means we'll see the feature show up in an actual iOS build, but the site says that the company's testing the mechanism in other internal tools... and if nothing else, Apple seems to be acknowledging that lock patterns aren't a terrible idea.

Add contact information to your Mac's login screen -

If you believe in the kindness of strangers, this tip might be for you. Most laptop users fear that their computer will be lost or stolen. Assuming that the right sort of person finds your laptop, however, they might be willing to return it to its rightful owner, if they knew how to contact you.

The Department of Health and Human Services has hired a consulting firm to investigate ways to make it easier to improve the security of electronic health records.

The HHS Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology awarded a $1.12 million contract to McLean, Va.-based LMI for a 13-month pilot project that's aimed at "reducing the burden of security on end-users of health IT so that it doesn't stand in the way of EHR adoption," said LMI spokesman Matt Daigle.

EFI adds AirPrint to corporate copiers and printers

By Steven Sande posted Feb 10, 2011 2:00PM

AirPrint is wonderful for those of us who can use it to print to home printers, but until now, the technology has been useless for most corporate copier / printers. That's all set to change now thatEFI is providing support for AirPrint to its signature Fiery print servers.

The PrintMe Connect software enables direct wireless printing from any iOS 4.2 mobile device. The software is free to download, and it works for printing to any Fiery-driven printer. According to EFI, "It is a software application that runs as a proxy on a Windows system to enable AirPrint printing for Fiery-driven printers with System 8/8e or later software version." AppleInsider notes that PrintMe Connect expands AirPrint to work with large format, high end and multifunction printers in the enterprise, and that there are more than 250,000 printers in corporate offices that will benefit from this free update.

Sweet app. Win two copies of myPhoneDesktop

Alaska Native Corporations' contracting status under fire again -

Four ANCs among the top 100 recipients of contract awards

Sen. Claire McCaskill will work again this year to end Alaska Native Corporations' special contracting status.

The Missouri Democrat introduced S. 236 on Jan. 31, which would eliminate the preferences and special rules under the Small Business Administration's 8(a) Business Development program for ANCs, which are partially owned by tribal people in Alaska.

She proposed the legislation in November at the end of that Congress, as did Rep. Bennie Thompson (D-Miss.), who was chairman of the House Homeland Security Committee at the time.

Ignore the headline. This is the real story-->Sun nailed for paying kickbacks to system integrators.

Oracle Corp. has agreed to pay $46 million to settle claims related to a suit against Sun Microsystems Inc., according to a Justice Department announcement.

This settlement resolves allegations under the False Claims Act and Anti-Kickback Act that Sun, which was acquired by Oracle in 2009 for approximately $7.4 billion, "knowingly paid kickbacks to systems integrator companies in return for recommendations that federal agencies purchase Sun's products," the Justice statement said.

"Sun executed agreements with consulting companies that provided for the payment of fees each time the companies influenced a government agency to purchase a Sun product. These kickback allegations are part of a larger, ongoing investigation of government technology vendors that has resulted in settlements to date with six other companies," Justice added.
