My6sense Intros Attention API for Hyper-Relevant Web

My6sense Intros Attention API for Hyper-Relevant Web

Content is coming at us from every direction in the form of streams, from blogs to tweets to social networks. These streams are combining to become information waterfalls of noise from practically every direction - noise because they are all shouting for our attention and demanding we choose them over updates from somewhere else. For some, this crashing sound has become information overload, as the demands from our data exceed the time we have available to give everything its appropriate attention. For the last nine months, I have been talking to you about my6sense's application for the iPhone, which watches my activity and senses what is most relevant to me, from my RSS feeds and my social streams. At the end of the last year, they became a Paladin client, and I have been working with them closely as they improve their digital intuition. Today, at the DEMO conference, they announce their new Attention API, which lets developers and service providers capture personalized relevance - and this, the ability to see my6sense-like sorting and impact throughout the Web, is what I have been waiting for. It is this Attention API that will help quiet the noise and start delivering clear signal from new ...

N Korea 'to put US man on trial'

North Korea says it will put a US citizen on trial for illegally entering the country, the state news agency reports.

The citizen was named as 30-year-old Aijalon Mahli Gomes, from Boston, the Korean Central News Agency reported.

His "crime has been confirmed", it said, without giving further details.

In late January, the North said it had detained an unidentified American. Last week, the US said the state had allowed a diplomat to visit the detainee.

The diplomat was from the Swedish embassy, which represents US interests in Pyongyang. American authorities have not named the US citizen concerned.

Met admits G20 unlawful arrests -BBC News

Met admits G20 unlawful arrests

The Metropolitan Police has paid damages to protesters it unlawfully arrested during the G20 protests.

The force paid £6,000 in damages to Hannah McClure and Andrew Rubens who were held during a raid on a squat.

The arrests came about when officers in riot gear broke up a meeting of some 60 climate camp activists during the April 2009 global summit in London.

Solicitors for the pair said that others demonstrators held during the same operation would now sue.

The Climate Camp anti-global warming group was one of the key protest groups involved in two days of G20 demonstrations centred on the City of London financial district.

Ms McClure, 22, and Mr Rubens, 23, had joined a meeting at premises at Earl Street on the edge of the Square Mile on 2 April.

Large numbers of police later arrived in riot gear and sealed off the street before detaining some 60 people who had been inside the building.

Google releases web security scanner

Skipfish runs via a Linux / Unix command line. Vergrößern
Google has released an open source scanner that allows web application developers to test their applications for security holes. The application, called Skipfish, offers a similar functionality to that of tools such as Nmapor Nessus, but it's said to be much faster. Using fully automated heuristics, it detects code that is vulnerable to cross-site scripting attacks (XSS), SQL and XML injection attacks and many other attack types. The tool's comprehensive post-processing of the individual test results is designed to help with the interpretation of the final report.

Skipfish is a pure C implementation and according to Google, can easily process 2,000 HTTP requests per second – provided the tested server can handle such a high load. In individual tests across local networks, 7,000+ requests per second have reportedly been sent with a modest CPU load and memory footprint.

EFF Posts Documents Detailing Law Enforcement Collection of Data From Social Media Sites

<--Amazing to see IRS cited as setting a good example. Nicely done!

Deeplink by Marcia Hofmann

EFF has posted documents shedding light on how law enforcement agencies use social networking sites to gather information in investigations. The records, obtained from the Internal Revenue Service and Department of Justice Criminal Division, are the first in a series of documents that will be released through a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) case that EFF filed with the help of the UC Berkeley Samuelson Clinic.

One of the most interesting files is a 2009 training course that describes how IRS employees may use various Internet tools -- including social networking sites and Google Street View -- to investigate taxpayers.

The IRS should be commended for its detailed training that clearly prohibits employees from using deception or fake social networking accounts to obtain information. Its policies generally limit employees to using publicly available information. The good example set by the IRS is in stark contrast to the U.S. Marshalls and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives. Neither organization found any documents on social networking sites in response to EFF's request suggesting they do not have any written policies or restrictions upon the use of these websites.

Apple leads the App Store race with 170,000 apps

Silicon Alley Insider has posted an interesting chart that shows the total number of apps available across various mobile platforms. As you can see from the chart, Apple's iPhone leads the pack by a longshot with 170,000 apps according to AppShopper.com. AppShopper typically lists more apps than Apple publicly states it has because AppShopper updates its numbers on a daily basis. As of today's count, AppShopper says Apple has approved 198,924 apps with 171,722 available to download. The discrepancy between the numbers accounts for apps that either the developers or Apple have removed from the App Store. Apple officially states that it currently has 150,000 ...

As one of ReadWriteWeb's iPhone users, I'm always looking for new applications to try out. Vivek Kundra told the BBC that he envisaged a world where anyone could "slice and dice" government information and share their results.

Mr Kundra is in charge of the US data.gov website, which gives citizens access to reams of official statistics.

People can use the data to create mashups and web applications to reveal new patterns and carry out analysis.

Too Little Too Late: Universal Music Finally Realizes That Maybe CDs Were Too Expensive

David Herron alerts us to the news that it's finally occurred to the brain trust at Universal Music that, perhaps, CD prices were too high. They've introduced a "new pricing structure," which effectively means they've lowered the suggested retail prices on many CDs to between $6 and $10. Amusingly, the article quotes an anonymous person at a competitor who doesn't like this at all: "Why does Universal feel the need to get below $10?" Uh, perhaps because the market is shrinking because people find it too expensive otherwise. Either way, this move seems like way too little, way too late. Doing this in the late 90s might have been a start, but this isn't going to get people who have stopped buying CDs back into a plastic disc ...

Quickly Cut, Copy, Paste Entire Paragraphs

It's well documented that when editing text on the iPhone you can double-tap to quickly select a word for copy and paste. But there's an undocumented feature that also lets you quickly select an entire paragraph. Quadruple-tapping on any editable text highlights the entire paragraph, not just the single word. It might take a little practice to get it just right, but after only a couple tries it becomes much faster than double-tap-dragging to select a block of text. This feature only works when editing text, so don't expect it to work while in Safari or other ...

A Skeptical Comparison of HTML5 Video Playback To Flash

A Skeptical Comparison of HTML5 Video Playback To Flash

gollum123 writes "Think we'd all be better off if HTML5 could somehow instantly replace Flash overnight? Not necessarily, according to a set of comparisons from Jan Ozer of the Streaming Learning Center website, which found that while HTML5 did come out ahead in many respects, it wasn't exactly a clear winner. They did find that HTML5 clearly performed better than Flash 10 or 10.1 in Safari on a Mac, although the differences were less clear cut in Google Chrome or Firefox. On the other hand, Flash more than held its own on Windows, and Flash Player 10.1 was actually 58% more efficient than HTML5 in Google Chrome on the Windows system tested. As you may have deduced, one of the big factors accounting for that discrepancy is that Flash is able to take advantage of GPU hardware acceleration in Windows, while Adobe is effectively cut out of the loop on Mac." gollum123 also links to additional tests indicating that Flash "does not perform consistently worse on Mac than on ...

US al-Qaeda spokesman 'arrested'

A US-born spokesman for al-Qaeda has been arrested in Karachi, Pakistani security officials have said.

Adam Gadahn has appeared in a number of al-Qaeda videos, going back at least six years, encouraging violent jihad.

The latest emerged on Sunday - the same day as his arrest was reported - urging US Muslims to attack their own country.

He was charged with treason in the US in 2006 and a reward offered for his arrest - which has not yet been confirmed by Islamabad or Washington.

He was the first American charged with treason in more than 50 years.

Described by analysts as one of the best-known faces of al-Qaeda after Osama bin Laden, Adam Gadahn has appeared frequently on videos encouraging attacks on Western targets.

Designing User Interfaces For Business Web Applications

Designing User Interfaces For Business Web Applications

Business Web application design is too often neglected. I see a lot of applications that don't meet the needs of either businesses or users and thus contribute to a loss of profit and poor user experience. It even happens that designers are not involved in the process of creating applications at all, putting all of the responsibility on the shoulders of ...

Why Was I Banned From Walmart For Not Showing My Receipt?

Why Was I Banned From Walmart For Not Showing My Receipt?

In the late afternoon my wife, infant son, and I went to Walmart and bought groceries and three Bluray discs. After paying for our merchandise, upon exiting the store we set off the RFID alarm. The greeter told me that she needed to check my receipt, and I declined such a check, explaining that I had paid for all my merchandise. We continued to walk to our car, where I unloaded our bags and returned my cart. Upon returning to the car, two Walmart Asset Protection employees verbally identified themselves as such (though they wore nothing to visually identify themselves as employees of Walmart) and asked to see my receipt since I had triggered the RFID alarm. I declined, and they insisted that they had a right to see my receipt. ...

It's Back! Layar's Mobile AR Browser Relaunches On iPhone

It's Back! Layar's Mobile AR Browser Relaunches On iPhone

In December of last year, augmented reality (AR) browser makers Layar chose to pull its iPhone app from the App Store due to frequent crashes reported by users. They thought it was better for their brand to remove the application than to promote a faulty product. As we've mentioned in the past, Layar had hinted that a revamped iPhone app would be out near the end of February, and earlier this week they released just ...

After Getting Acquired by Google, ReMail Goes Open Source

After Getting Acquired by Google, ReMail Goes Open Source

Just about a month after acquiring the popular iPhone email client reMail, Google and the reMail team have decided to open source the application's code. While current reMail users were able to use the app, Google decided to pull the application from the App Store after the acquisition. Given that the reMail team was joining Google to work on projects unrelated to reMail, this looks like a smart move. The source code is already available on Google Code under the Apache 2.0 License. ...

Foursquare, Baby,

Foursquare.

Foursquare may still be relatively small (around 450,000 users), but wow have they been able to woo certain areas of the mainstream quickly. We already know about the deals with Conde Nast, Marc Jacobs, the New York Times, and others — some of which are pulling in revenue. And then there's the Bravo deal, which has already included a commercial spot. But now, Foursquare is getting love in the bright lights of ...

Netflix Eyes iPhone for Movie, TV Streaming

Netflix has renewed its interest in the iPhone as a video streaming platform, with a survey asking its customers how much they want an app for the iPhone (and, almost certainly, the iPad). The proposed app would allow them to watch thousands of movies and television shows for about the price of one movie ticket per month, with no need for a traditional cable or satellite ...

News >> - DoD Requires Hacker Certification

Official government cyber defenders are now required to have the skills of a hacker according to a mandatory certification approved this week by the Department of Defense.

The DoD now requires its computer network defenders (CNDs) pass Certified Ethical Hacker certification program from the International Council of E-Commerce Consultants (EC-Council) to fulfill baseline skills.

The Certified Ethical Hacker qualification tests someone's knowledge in the mindset, tools, and techniques of a hacker.

CNDs -- who are part of the DoD's information assurance workforce -- protect, monitor, analyze, detect, and respond to unauthorized activity within DoD information systems and computer networks.

OMB taking a deeper look at data centers

By April 30, agencies must complete an initial inventory of the hardware at their data centers. Then by June 30, agencies must develop an initial consolidation plan that identifies "potential areas for consolidation, areas where optimization through server virtualization or cloud computing alternatives may be used and a high-level roadmap for transitioning to the consolidated end-state architecture."

A month after that, agencies must finalize their inventories and by Aug. 30, they must complete their consolidation plans and include them in their fiscal 2012 budget request.

"These plans must be approved by OMB by Dec. 31," the memo states. "The final plans will include a technical roadmap and approach for achieving the targets for infrastructure utilization, energy efficiency and cost efficiency."

Kundra writes that OMB will monitor agency progress on consolidating data centers through quarterly updates starting in 2011 as well as annual inventory updates.

Corrupt foreign officials funneling 'millions' into U.S., Senate investigation concludes

Corrupt foreign officials “and their relatives” have brought millions of dollars in “illicit” money into the U.S., according to an investigation by the Senate’s Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations.

“Corruption is a direct threat to our national interest,” Senator Carl Levin (D-MI), subcommittee chairman, said in a statement. “That’s why the United States is engaged in a relentless, worldwide battle to stop the flow of illegal money into and within places like Iraq and Afghanistan. Laundered money is used to train and provide support for terrorists and terrorism. If we want to credibly lead efforts to stop illegal money abroad, we’ve got to stop it here at home as well.”

The 330-page report found that there are “glaring gaps” in the anti-money laundering (AML) programs that banks are required to establish, and that, moreover, corrupt and powerful officials have used the services of “U.S. lawyers, lobbyists, real estate and escrow agents, and other professionals who currently have no obligation” to operate under AML restrictions.

ICE will retain 'Brady' handgun background check data for only one day <-24 hours?

Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) gathers all kinds of personal information about possible “criminal aliens,” and plans to retain that data in “secure facilities behind locked doors” for periods ranging from five to 75 years; except one specific type of data -- information gathered in background checks about foreign individuals attempting to purchase handguns – which ICE plans to retain for only 24 hours.

In a notice published in the Federal Register on February 24, ICE indicated that it plans to store personal information it receives through immigration status checks required under the Brady Handgun Violence Protection Act for only one day.

By contrast, ICE plans to retain similar information it receives about possible criminal aliens through “traditional law enforcement checks” for 75 years; through suspicious activity reporting received on its Tip-line for 10 years; and through immigration status checks related to special security events, such as the Super Bowl, for five years.
